The group of vehicles which were part of the competition in the category included the Chevrolet Volt, Dodge Charger, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Mini Countryman, and Toyota Prius V.

Recently, the all-new Kia Sportage won the honor of Top Safety Pick in the small SUV category by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In order to be named a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle has to earn “good” ratings in side, frontal, rear and rollover crash tests. The vehicle also must have electronic stability control ESP, which is standard on the 2011 Sportage.
Earning the Top Safety Pick Award has become tougher when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety introduced the rollover crash test, which measures vehicle’s roof strength and is twice as stringent as the federal requirement.
To pass this test, a vehicle’s roof must be able to withstand the force of four times the vehicle’s weight. According to the IIHS, the 2011 Kia Sportage can withstand 4.43 times its body weight, which means it easily surpasses the IIHS requirements!

The ratings were based on side, frontal, rear, and rollover-including roof strength, tests for safety in an impact crash. The rating of “Good” is the highest rating achievable and the 2011 Kia Sportage safety record proves this.
